Recycling = Public Health

The advancement of public health is very important to the community as a whole, and also has an effect on individuals as well. The location that we chose to place our "This is Public Health" sticker represents our interpretation of public health. Tampa is home to the Recyclosaurus Rex, which is a community landmark in front of the Museum of Science and Industry. This landmark was chosen because of the benefits of recycling and proper waste management. The structure of the dinosaur itself was made out of recycled material, and in its belly it contains aluminum cans and plastic containers. This is a great way to promote better recycling habits, and remind the public on this importance.
Recycling can improve public health by preventing air pollution. Recycling can reduce the gaseous waste that is projected out in the air by certain industries. Industries that manufacture items made from metal and plastic can release large amounts harmful and toxic gases. This landmark reminds us of the importance of recycling to reduce the harmful pollutants that can be spewed by the manufacturing industries. Improper waste disposal can cause grave dangers and affect the public health of communities. By recylcing, we can decrease the amount of waste that is disposed in the landfills. Too much trash can accumulate in the landfills and affect communities that are in close proximity to the landfill area. The more trash that accumulates as a result of poor recycling habits, can result in a decreased amount of places to dispose of our trash. Recyclosaurus Rex is a great reminder of how we should take recycling more seriously, and attempt to reduce the amount of trash that we produce.

  1. The “Recyclosaurus Rex” is a great symbol of public health! I am glad that someone did do that because every time I pass it the environmental side of me smiles. For one, it is aesthetically pleasing which is big for the location. It is a new, fun way to do well for the environment. In regards to the location, it brings about a lot of awareness to the fact that recycling and cleanliness of the environment around us is a huge issue. Just thinking about how all those cans and bottles will be used again, and if handled responsibly after that, again! Not only will they be used again but they will be kept off of highways, out of the ocean, out of our front yards, and most of all out of the way of the inhabitants, including animals big and small, of our environment. I feel like this is a huge step for public health! This is really opening the eyes of the public and being that it is on a major connecting road between two highly traveled interstates it will get a lot of attention. Hopefully the future holds a spot for this wonderful advancement around the world. I know that it would do nothing but benefit the environment as a whole, great job guys!

  2. I think that "Recyclosaurus Rex" was such a great idea! I remember coming to Tampa as a kid to go to Busch Gardens and being endlessly fascinated by him. I recently read an article about his need for renovations and the discussion to whether it was worth it. The fact that your group chose him as your location speaks to the argument that he is definitely worth the repairs. Recyclosaurus Rex represents an essential part of both public health and community awareness of the importance of recycling.

I like how the Recyclosaurus serves as a promoter for recycling. I love the idea for your choice and i want to know where you found the insanely huge, monsterous, 'This is public health' sticker. ;)

  4. The Recyclosaurus Rex is a known tourist landmak and for someone that lives in Tampa, I never knew its purpose. Rex is used to remind people as they pass in their cars or ride their bikes that they need to recycle their plastic and paper products. Recycling helps promote a clean environment which in turn promotes a healthy lifestyle. So Recyclosaurus is most definitely PUBLIC HEALTH.

  6. First off I would like to say that you guys picked an amazing spot to place your sticker. I drove by it so many times and didn't not realize what it was until your group's presentation, just kept thinking that it was just like an attraction to get people to go to MOSI. This Recyclosaurus Rex is an great idea for public health because as you guys mentioned it not only educates people about the whole idea of recycling, and knowing the fact that it is made of recycled bottles is even more better. I hope that people realize how much recycling helps and this Rex just does that. And hoping that people start recycling once they know more about this. You guys opened my eyes to start recycling one step at a time. Thanks and this placing the sticker at that place was just amazing and represents PUBLIC HEALTH completely.

  7. I drive by MOSI all the time to go to work, but it wasn't until last week I noticed there were actual bottles inside the dinosaur. Suprisingly, that's the topic ya'll decided to do. I like the concept of Recyclosaurus because it is a huge focal point at MOSI in which can motive people to recycle. I agree with the need to provide recycling bins more to the community so others can recycle. I recycled back home, but since I moved to Tampa I do it rarely due to the abscence of recycling bins in my apartment community.
