Water Fountains are Public Health

For many people on the outside looking in, Public Health may seem trivial, but those people are the ones who take a lot of things for granted around them. Public Health improves the life of everyone around the world through education, healthier lifestyles, and research of new arising diseases. In this “This is Public Health” activity our group decided to choose a water fountain as a bold sign of what Public Health really represents. We located a water fountain in the University Mall in Tampa, Florida and placed our sticker right in the middle of it to draw everyone’s attention to the fact at hand. We chose this location because it is a common spot for large numbers of people to come and go throughout the day. Water fountains are located in many public locations such as parks, malls, schools, and many other miscellaneous places and it is a prime example of the public taking Public Health for granted. What people do not recognize is the importance a water fountain serves; having a water fountain not only supplies them with a clean, convenient, and pocket friendly source of hydration but it also does saves millions of plastic bottles from being used. In turn, this prevents us from overusing the resource and also preventing potential littering from happening. This issue is important because it provides the public with clean water, and helps the population as a whole to “go green” by using less plastic bottles. All of these factors are essential for leading a healthier lifestyle, so next time you take a drink out of that water fountain, remember, This Is Public Health!

  1. What a great spot! Because of your efforts, many people will see it there! I love that you recognize that not only is the fountain providing people with clean water, but it's eco-friendly: limiting our over use of plastic bottles.

  2. This is a great way to show what is public health. It demonstrates how public health is everywhere and available to everybody. Its important that we recognize that even the water fountains, which we almost never realize, provide us with one of the most important necessities for our health. Nice! :)

  3. This is a terrific spot. It really shows people what public health is. Water fountains are everywhere and they are free for people to drink out of. I also really like the fact that you said it is eco-friendly! A lot of people probably do not realize that, water fountains do decrease the use of plastic water bottles. The only thing is that water fountains could be dirty how often does that water fountain get cleaned? They need to invent or produce a water fountain that is automatic like the soap dispensers and the sinks. That would decrease the use of plastic bottles and germs people can get from touching the fountain, that would really show people Public Health!

  4. I think this is a great spot to put the "this is public health” sticker. Water fountains have been around for a long time and most people take advantage of them and not realize that there are public health issues. They provide free clean water to the public. Water is one of the most basic necessities in our lives, without water we as humans cannot survive. So providing the water at convenient locations is wonderful, especially outside near parks and places that people are walking through or doing activities nearby where they can become thirsty. Also like it was mentioned in class it helps reduce the use for plastic water bottles and is Eco-friendly.

  5. I believe the place of the sticker is really good because lots of people go to the University Mall. With this population water fountain is another important thing, especially in this summer time where people drink a lot of water. Some people do not like to use these water fountains because they do not want to touch the same place as others: they do not want to be secondarily contaminated. I believe adding a hand sanitizer near to the water fountain will attract everyone walking by.

  6. I think it was a great idea for your group to choose this location for the "This is Public Health" project. Water fountains are a great source of clean drinking water for everyone, and readily accesible, allowing many people to benefit from it. Clean drinking water is a necessity that many people don't have the luxury of having. Hopefully with this sticker more people will be conscious of how substantial the benefits of water fountains are and will begin to use free facilities such as the one in your picture.
