Bicycles are Public Health

What comes to mind when someone asks you what public health is? A lot of people are not sure what to say when asked maybe because they are not exactly sure or maybe because there are too many things to say as an answer. Truthfully, public health is absolutely everywhere. The example that our group picked is a bicycle rack in a park. Bicycles themselves are a huge part of public health. Many people might ask how this is public health; we came up with two very important examples of how they are public health. First, bicycles are great for promoting physical activity. America’s obesity epidemic is a very serious problem with rates of about 30% being obese in the United States. One of the number one reasons why obesity is such a problem is because many Americans lack physical activity. Riding a bicycle is a great way to exercise and it helps one in becoming more physically active. The second reason our group came up with is pollution. Motor vehicles are one of the greatest contributors to pollution. According to the Environmental Defense Fund, motor vehicles have a huge impact on global warming. In riding a bike people will use their vehicles less, therefore lowering the amount of pollution they are putting into our atmosphere. It’s obvious that bicycles do not emit pollution, so it would be beneficial to the environment if more people used a bicycle as a means of transportation instead of motor vehicles. It was important to us to include the bike rack in our picture because we believe having bike racks will only help to promote people in riding bicycles; people need to know they have a safe place where they can leave their bike, otherwise no one would ride their bike.

  1. Great blog about bicycles being a part of public health, not just impacting peoples health but also the environment. The point that you guys brought bicycles making the environment cleaner by lowering the amount of pollution to the atmosphere was great. The fact is bicycles are still and will always be useful source to conserve our environment and health, promoting bicycle use, is a great initiative to making public health worldwide more effective.

  3. You know it's funny that you mention bicycles as being part of public health, because I would have never thought of it that way. The examples you guys gave were absolutely correct. As a person who rides bicycles, I totally agree with the idea that bicycle riding is a great form of exercise and can help prevent obesity if done diligently. Really cool how you guys mentioned a decrease in vehicle use also. Many people ride cars and buses just for quick transportation, but never take in consideration how harmful it is to our envrionment. Excellent job guys.

  4. This was a great blog, and i definitely agree, riding bicycles is a part of public heath. Riding bikes is a great way to increase physical activity and it will reduce the amount of pollution in the air. Over the past few years I have seen an increase in the commercials on tv that promote bike riding instead of driving as a way to keep healthy and stay fit.

I think highlighting the impact that bicycle riding has on both the physical health of the cyclist as well as the surrounding environment in general is a great idea. Your blog brought my attention to benefits bestowed by bicycle riding as a means of transportation, rather than for sport or exercise, in a way that I had never appreciated/recognized prior to reading your blog. Thank you and great job!

  6. I like your idea on incorporating transportation into Public Health! I feel that most of the time we tend to think of Public Health as dealing with health and germs and we often forget the importance of exercise and clean air! I definitely agree with you that this something we can do on an individual level to do our part in contributing to better Public Health. Excellent correlation of bicycling to environmental health and helping decrease the obesity epidemic - two things we as a society really need to work on. Way to kill two birds with one stone!

  7. I totally agree that public health is everywhere. However I never thought of a bicycle in itself being public health. When I think of public health and bicycles I automatically think of safety features such as bells, lights and helmets. This blog opened up a whole new way of looking at public health for me. Public health is part of everything we do as human beings because everything has an impact on us! Awesome!
