Adult Toy Stores and Public Health

Sexual Behavior in all its flavors can be explored fully in many adult toy stores across the nation. Many adults do not think about safe practices when using these toys. Heck, sometimes it is difficult to sway them into wearing protection or using barriers to body fluids. So when we adults think about these types of locations, locations like The Todd, we tend to think of fun and not of safety.

But did you know that places like The Todd could play a very important role in the promotion of Public Health? When you purchase items from such locations, The staff could provide a brief, but very important education in regard to your sexual health. These places offer the perfect environment to educate you about your own sexual safety and how to keep your partner or partners safe from STIs, STDs, and unwanted pregnancy.

Prior to buying your toy or product of choice, they could demonstrate to you its proper use, instruct you on how to clean and store it after using, and how to avoid exposure to each others body fluids, specifically, via the toy. They could advise on the reduced efficacy of condoms when used in conjunction with spermicides, the importance of using oral barriers when having oral sex, and many other little known facts about reducing your exposure to an unwanted outcome. And the staff could do all this educating while still encouraging you, the buyer, that the fun factor is not going to be reduced by being more careful in your play.

Adult toy stores could be a new avenue for public health officials to reach out and promote safer sex , not only for the general public, but also for the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender public who are generally underserved in sexual health education. This is probably due to the taboo nature discussing alternative sexual experiences. So, doesn't it seem perfect that a place that gives you the giggles when you talk about shopping there, could also be the place that educates you about the ways to experience fun and safe sex in any form?

  1. Bravo! THIS was a venue I was not expecting to be featured, however everything you said is true! I like your perspective on how Adult entertainment stores are already places that are pretty open about sex so why not make them places to promote healthy, safe sex! I agree that the public consider it taboo to discuss "alternative sexual experiences" but the reality is that if it isn't addressed people may be getting STI's in ways they never imagined possible. This is definitely a Public Health Issue considering that toys are touched and demonstrated by multiple persons before someone purchases it.

  2. I agree with Elyse, this location was completely unexpected and I loved it, very creative. Sex toy shops do have a bad taboo on them but what you said was true, its good that the one place that shows a different side to "out of the norm" sexual practices are informing their customers about safety. Sex is definitely a public health issue and I think you guys hit it right on the nail and out of the box.

I do not agree with the concept that adult’s toy store can promote public health. I understand where you guys come from when you said toys sex can prevent certain STD and unwanted pregnancy. Yes, you do have a point; however we must not forget that injuries are among the leading cause of death in the U.S. Despite the education that you guys claimed a person can receive from those stores, a person is still at risk of injuries when he or she used a toy sex. Although rare, vaginal or rectal prolapsed is example of injuries due to the use of sex toy.
Additionally, there is risk of infection such as yeast infection especially when people used toy like dildo both way (vaginal and rectal). Moreover, certain sex toys can be toxic. Phthalates for example, the ingredient use in soft plastic vibrators and dildos is known to be toxic .Also, keep in mind that toys sex can also cause severe internal bleeding which can end up to more complication such as surgical procedure. If public health is advocated the promotion of health and prevent disease I am pretty sure that there are better way we can come up to promote safety during sex.

You bring up some interesting public health issues and concerns.

Interestingly the author of this article comments that use of sex toys, according to most research, is safe when used correctly. The author gives credence to the opposition although he emphasizes the importance of critically evaluating the biases inherent in different sources.

It is always nice to review both sides of an issue but we need to continually evaluate our sources to ensure that we are gaining access to credible information.

  11. It had been over 6 months since Mum and I moved to Bristol, and her promotion to sales and marketing manager was everything she had wanted. We had settled down in our new home and our love life was all so good and exciting. We have explored each other’s bodies to the maximum, leaving nothing we could not do in the sexual department apart from a few ideas. But overall, Mum made love to me as a lover not a boy-turned-girl. Read more adult stories
