Just 'cuz I play poker doesn't mean I'm a smoker

Everyone desires to have fun and enjoy life, whether it be a theme park, the beach or even a casino. As our group analyzed different public health issues that may be of a concern in our community, we thought of something that we all like to do and that is enjoy ourselves. However, some places like the Hard Rock Casino does not accommodate all of its guest for example those that do not spoke.

I am sure many of you have been to the casino and noticed that there seems to be people smoking everywhere and there is no separation to prevent second hand smoking. This is a public health issue because second hand smoking is the third leading cause of preventable death in this country. And it is preventable death for a reason, it can be avoided. At the Hard Rock Casino, it is not a place for non-smokers, pregnant women or people with asthma to gamble or even enjoy themselves, without participating in second hand smoking.

So this is demonstrated in our picture, where as you can see Lena and Kevin are smoking, John is a guest who does not smoke and Shanice is a pregnant women, this is to show that if this group of friends decided to take a trip to the Casino, only the smokers would be able to enjoy themselves without being at risk of second hand smoking. Hopefully our blog will help bring on awareness to promote better health and to being enlightenment to the fact that there should be a smoking and a non-smoking section in Casinos.

  1. This is a public health issue that i was not aware of. there are many public places that is open to the public but do not accommondate all of their guest. Second hand smoke is a serious issue and I do believe business owners should take it more seriously and consider how it can affect all of their guest. Great idea!

  2. What a great idea,I often as a non-smoker hold my breath trying not to inhale the smoke. As you stated, smokers aren't the only individuals who go to casino's to have a good time; so why should non-smokers be inconvenience therfore, I totally agree with your idea. Great Blog!

  3. I never realized it to be a public health issue because it never really bothered me. But second hand smoke is a problem. I think it would be a little hard to accommodate now since all casinos are set in place and you would need separate room, but maybe building one that doesn't allow smoking. Even though i don't think they would get much publicity.

  4. The casino being a public health issue never really crossed my mind before. With the amount of smoking that takes place in there can definitely cause harm to the many of non-smokers who go there. Casinos should possibly consider having non-smoking areas or better ventilated areas so that the smoke would not be as much of a problem for their customers.

  5. I am so glad you ladies and gentlemen did this as your public health blog!! I love the casino and actual applied and got a job there (which is hard), but I hate going there and turned down the money just because there is so much smoke in there it literally makes me sick to my stomach! I really hope there is something we can do about all smoking in public places because if they want to smoke that stuff knowing it kills them then that is their thing and other people who choose not too should not be punished with that deathening smoke! Great blog guys!

  6. I didn't realize the Clean Indoor Air Act doesn't cover casinos. It would suck to have a job there and have to breathe in the smoke all day long. I'm not sure how the severity of non-smoking is compared to smoking, but I would imagine that working full time at a place like that could potentially be even worse than smoking one cigarette a day yourself.

  7. I agree that this is definitely a big Public Health issue. The risk of disease and illness is just as high for people with long lasting exposure to second hand smoke as to people who personally smoke, and have been smoking for a long time. I believe this situation would be different if there was a nonsmoking guest or even if just the entrance, waiting areas or dining parts of the casino were considered to be smoke free zones. Although this would not solve the problem completely, it would definitely cut down on exposure for those who chose to exhibit careful behaviors. Great idea, great message, great post.
