Nutritional Facts for a Healthier You

Planet Smoothie's Menu and Nutritional Guide

Public health measures a lot of aspects in everyday such as: preventative care and a healthier lifestyle. Obesity is a growing problem in the United States and Americans are trying new ways to cut calories with the hopes of becoming a healthier nation. Businesses are looking for ways of making their products healthier for Americans, because obesity is such a large issue. Smoothies are a healthier choice you can substitute instead of an ice cream sundae. We decided to place our sticker at Planet Smoothie, located on Bruce B. Downs next to Panera Bread. The sticker is placed on a nutritional guide that provides you with nutritional facts, organic and all natural ingredients. Planet Smoothie tries to implement protein, weight loss, energy, and wellness into their products. Smoothies are a convenient way to get the nutrition and a quick energy burst for the late night studying. This location is surrounded by college students who are looking for a well balanced diet. Another plus about this location is that it is very convenient to get in and out of as well as being near a busy shopping center. Also Planet Smoothie offers free WI-FI and has nice outside seating. Planet Smoothie has calorie counters for each smoothie and according to their quick reference guide on nutrition, has recently replaced their artificial sweetener with botanical sweetener (Stevia). Smoothies aren’t the only thing you can get at Planet Smoothie they have frozen yogurt as well as protein bars and healthy snack options. This Public Health issue on obesity and getting proper nutrition is important to help maintain a healthy diet and kick start a healthier way of life.

  2. I think this is a great example of Public Health, seeing as how obesity is constantly rising in America. Obesity discriminates no one and as college students we face this epidemic everyday. We already have so much going on in our lives and with studying, homework, and tests we can sometimes feel overwhelmed. Our last concern is whether or not what were eating is necessarily good for us. So I think it is great to see more places around campus offering healthier food choices and posting nutritional facts up for everyone to see. That is Public Health at its finest, promoting good health and trying to prevent disease which in this case is obesity. There is a lot to look forward to in college and so much to gain from the experience, but Public Health shows you that the "Freshmen 15" does not have to be one them. Great job on showing what Public Health is :)

  3. The nutritional guide and menu were a great idea for this assignment because it is representative of prevention. I never stopped to think, before I read this post, that nutritional guides were part of Public Health. The availability of this information to customers is awesome because it leads to better awareness of what they are eating. Obesity is a major problem in the United States. According to the CDC, “in 2007-2008 72.5 million people in the United States were obese based on measured weights and heights" (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2010). This number is huge! Some people may not even look twice at the information they are provided with and it's such a crucial tool to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Anything that restaurants can do to reduce obesity and promote health is appreciated as well as welcomed. More people need to take the time and find out exactly what they are feeding their bodies. From now on, I will definitely be paying attention to the information such as nutritional guides that are provided by different restaurants and making healthier food choices.

  4. This is a very good example of public health. According to the CDC, there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in America in the past 20 years (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2011). This will always be a problem because fruits and vegetables are a lot more expensive than a meal from a fast food restaurant. Some fast food chains are doing a better job by providing salads and some sort of healthy selections.

  5. Openly available nutritional information is an important aspect of public health because it allows the individual to chose what he or she consumes. Obesity in the developed world is a rampant problem, and much of it is associated to fast food. The nutritional information aids customers in deciding what to purchase and highlights both the very unhealthy options as well as the healthy. I think if restaurants displayed calorie counts next to the price of its items there would probably be a drastic change in the type of food ordered.
