So Fresh & So Clean Clean

We placed our public health sticker in a Taco Bell restroom. We noticed that near the sink, there were many signs promoting public health. One of the signs said that the bathrooms are checked every thirty minutes and that if you are unhappy with the conditions, please report them to the staff. This sign allows for the opinions of the public to be heard and the sanitation to be changed if the cleanliness doesn't meet your expectations. Hygiene and sanitation are very important to everyone.

There was also a sticker on the soap dispenser. This sticker told the bathroom user why soap usage is important and how to properly wash your hands. The bacteria and viruses that are on the filthy surfaces can get onto your hands and then they can eventually make their way into the general public. One of the main issues in washing hands and keeping restrooms clean is so that the fecal/oral bacateria does not come into contact with your hands or face. This can lead to some nasty and embarrassing health issues.

With these signs, public health becomes the responsibility of the individual. While keeping you clean and safe, you are also keeping the next person to use the restroom clean and safe. Everyone who uses the loo and utilizes the resources availiable is not only helping themsleves, but in turn, they are helping those around them.

  1. Although Toca Bell may not generally sell healthy foods, it still promotes public health, which is why I liked this post. I believe cleanliness is a very important aspect of public health, and is very useful in contributing to preventing diseases. Toca Bell took necessary measures to ensure public health knowledge to their customers, employees, and establishment by keeping a well kept atmosphere, especially the restroom. I also liked the statement made by this group: public health is the responsibility of each individual. Just as Toca Bell can not make an individual eat their high calorie foods, nor can they make individuals wash their hands(unless he or she is an employee), they can only promote public health by providing necessary tools.

  2. In my opinion, hand washing is the absolute best way to inhibit the spread of germs, viruses, and bacteria. I commend Taco Bell for posting signs promoting hand washing and giving reasons why it is so important. Most signs in restaurants read “Employees MUST wash hands before returning to work” but they do not mention why it is so important. Checking the bathrooms so often also promotes proper sanitary habits and conditions. By keeping the facilities clean, it does as posted above, decrease the chances of transmitting disease through the fecal/oral route. With so many sicknesses and diseases being infectious and transmitted by contaminated objects or the fecal/oral route, having signs that post the dangers, will hopefully make people aware of their sanitary conditions and maybe improve them. I did not realize Taco Bell implemented such useful public health measures, but I think it is a practice every restaurant and public place should adopt.
